| Bushman

Bushman
is defined as one who heals via natural medicine. This aptly describes
Mr. Dwight Duncan aka Bushman whom, instead of using herbs and
leaves to treat mankind's woes; his pancreas for an ailing society
is soulful roots music. Inspired by His Imperial Majesty Emperor
Haile Selassie the First of Ethiopia, Bushman feeds a troubled
world with hard-hitting social commentary served over rugged dancehall
rhythms. He himself has been compared to some of the greats in
reggae. His baritone vocals has often been compared to that of
a Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown and Luciano whom Bushman admits, is
a dominant influence in his career. As a child of the church choir,
Bushman delivers a sincere message of love to all those who are
willing to listen.
Dwight Duncan was born and raised in a small rural district named
Prospect Beach a parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica WI. Early in Dwight's
childhood his passion for music was evident as he took part in
the local church choir. In his teens Dwight adopted the name Junior
Melody while he began selecting music for a Local sound system
called Black Starliner. Seeing his future before his eyes "Junior
Melody" felt limited at home due to the lack of Studio's.
So, he then ventured seventy miles to Kingston where opportunities
were more exposed. Making the transition from country to town
was an experience on its own opening his eyes to an environment
not so friendly to new comers. He would hitch hike to the studio
and wait all day to record.
Months
later he met with Steelie and Cleevie at Arrows Dub Plate studio
where they played and impromptu game of soccer. Steelie then invited
Junior Melody to Studio 2000 for an audition. They were impressed
with the young singer and immediately voiced "Grow Your Natty"
a defining song in Junior Melody's career. It was at this time,
Steelie gave him the name Bushman. The name change was met with
some resistance from the singer. He thought the name Bushman made
a mockery of his humble country upbringing. When the definition
of Bushman was made clear to him he thought it fitting because
music is the original medicine.
The
next collaboration between Bushman and Stuido 2000 gave Bushman
international acclaim. A single named "Call the Hearse"
which, was one of the biggest core dancehall efforts for the year,
gave way to Bushman releasing his debut album on VP Records entitled
"Nyah Man Chant". It was at this point in his career
where he needed some guidance and decided to take a year hiatus
where he could look within and become a little more familiar with
his mission.
After his yearlong break, Bushman began a musical relationship
with yet another one of Jamaica's top producers. Lloyd "King
Jammy's" James and Bushman conspired on two album's. Producing
hit's like Fire Burn a Weakheart, Fire Pon A Deddas, Your Love
and many more. King Jammy's and Bushman respectively admire each
other's efforts as producer and artist. King Jammy's then commented
Bushman saying "Higher Ground, was one the best albums he
ever produced".
Bushman
is currently celebrating the release of his new album on VP Records
entitled "Signs" an endeavor to which Bushman takes
the role of Artist/Producer. The album includes songs like Downtown,
Light It Up, Creatures of the Night and the smash hit "Light
house". This release marks a growing point in Bushman's career
giving him more autonomy.
Bushman
has experienced alot in the past couple of years and due to his
strong faith and undying will Bushman has become one of Jamaica's
premier artist. A devout Rastafarian and vegetarian Bushman, exemplifies
through every note the urgency of his message.
